1926

The Road Is Born

On April 30, 1926, the highway designation U.S. 66 is proposed. November 11 of that same year, it's officially adopted — stitching together a 2,448-mile arc from Lake Michigan to the Pacific.

1930s

The Mother Road

Dust Bowl families head west, and Route 66 earns its enduring nickname — The Mother Road. A lifeline of hope, paved with possibility.

1940s

Wartime Highway

Troops, supplies, and relocating workers stream westward. The Mother Road becomes a strategic American artery.

1950s

Get Your Kicks

Diners glow with neon. Motels flash Vacancy. Classic cars cruise sunset boulevards. The road becomes the post-war American daydream.

1960s

TV & Song

A landmark cultural, historical, and destination music festival celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Route 66 — culminating where it always has, at the Pacific. All-day food, live music from local legends to national headliners, classic cars, and Route 66 storytelling, broadcast to the world from America's most iconic finish line.
